Production Operator

Principal Functional Responsibilities:

Machine Operator positions are responsible for following instructions and established safety requirements to operate equipment used in various stages of the cable manufacturing process to meet productivity requirements and create products that conform to quality standards.


Tools and Equipment used:

Diagonal cutting pliers, 12” and 24” crescent wrenches, hex key set, circumference tape, channel lock pliers, nut drivers, screwdriver, hydraulic cutters, various powered and non-powered hand tools, spatula, a one quart spray bottle, pay-off and take up equipment, arc welder cable cutters, and overhead cranes, black or yellow tubing cutters, oscillating cutting saw, band saw, air ratchet, torque wrench when assembling head, hydraulic and manual cutters, hydraulic and manual crimping tools, coarse and fine files, air drill.


Essential Functions:

Key Requirements:

  1. Responsible for following standard work instructions corresponding with job
  2. Loads material into machine using mechanical devices as needed and threads wire through line 
  3. Starts machine and observes operation to detect machine malfunction  
  4. Adjusts machine controls to regulate factors such as line speed, O.D. thickness, color, steam pressure, temperature, water level, and tensions
  5. Starts machine and observes operation to detect machine malfunction 
  6. Examines wire for conformance to specifications and performs quality checks 
  7. Changes machine according to part runs as specified on Work Order 
  8. Removes full reel from machine and replaces with empty reels in order to continue the manufacturing process. 
  9. Uses HFA or DAS programs to record and tag data such as scrap and finished goods
  10. Responsible for quality logs, production reporting, and any other applicable paperwork
  11. Responsible for initiating actions to prevent the occurrence of nonconformities, identifying and recording problems relating to product quality, processes, and quality systems, as well as controlling further processing or delivery of nonconforming product. 
  12. May be responsible for using hand operated cranes or hoists, powered industrial trucks or jacks to move material in or around the machine being operated. 
  13. Responsible for adhering to the health, safety, and environmental policies and regulations
  14. Responsible for adherence to company policies and procedures meeting the established General Cable Values and Behaviors, performing at the highest degree of Integrity, including satisfactory job performance
  15. Responsible for maintaining thorough understanding and awareness of job processes, procedures and policies by attending required training sessions, meetings and monitoring announcements and information distributed through General Cable communication channels (Bulletin Boards, CCTV monitors, All Associates Meetings, etc)
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned by Department Manager and/or Supervisor

    Working Conditions effecting key requirements:

    This job is performed almost exclusively indoors. It is not located in a high noise area. Safety shoes, safety glasses with side shields, ear plugs, gloves and arm protectors are required as part of the personal protective equipment.


    Special Requirements:

    Must be able to push or pull 100 pounds infrequently and pull up to 75 pounds and push up to 65 pounds routinely. Must be able to lift 50 pounds infrequently and routinely lift 25 pounds.


    Personal Protective Equipment:

    Safety glasses with side shields, ear protection, and safety shoes are required in all production areas. The following additional personal protective equipment is required for this job, and must be used as appropriate: cotton/canvas gloves and cut resistant gloves/sleeves
